Closest Skiing to Las Vegas

Normally you wouldn‘t pack your ski gloves on a trip to Las Vegas, but if you are planning a trip this winter, make some extra room in your suitcase for them! The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort in Lee Canyon is just a 50-minute drive from the glitz of the Strip, and is a fabulous winter playground. It‘s easy to get there too - you take Route 95 north to Route 156 west. The signs will direct you to Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon. Within a few minutes, you will find yourself in a sparkling, snow-covered white wonderland!

Alpine Skiing has been popular in Lee Canyon since the 1930‘s, when the only way skiers could get to the top was to be towed behind horse drawn sleds! Fortunately for us, Lee Canyon has come a long way! They have three chair lifts and several trails for skiing, snowboarding and snow sliding. The top of the summit is 9,510 feet high, with a vertical drop of 1,000 feet to the base! That allows for fantastic advanced and intermediate ski runs. They do offer an easy run called the Rabbit Peak which is great for kids.

Lessons are available too! The staff is led by Marcel Barel of Switzerland. He is an internationally acclaimed PSIA-W certified ski school director. The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort offers daily group lessons for those 8-years-old and up at 11:00am and 2:00pm. The lessons last for 1 1/2 hours. The cost is fairly inexpensive if you have your own equipment, or you can get a package deal that includes the rental equipment, a lift ticket and the lesson. They offer a children‘s program on the weekends and holidays for children ages 4 - 12.

After a day of skiing, snowboarding or sledding, you can get chilled to the bone! To warm up, head into the lodge, grab a bite to eat and gulp down some hot chocolate in the Big Horn Cafe, and browse through the retail shops. The area is open daily from 9:00am - 4:00pm, so there‘s plenty of time to squeeze in a few runs before you head back down to the Strip for some of the famous Vegas nightlife. Hey, you could even work off those extra calories from one of the many sumptuous Vegas buffets.... Any way you roll the dice, the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort at Lee Canyon is a sure bet for family fun!
